Ransom (David Malouf, Knopf) has been named the winner of this year's ALS Gold Medal.

Ransom beat The Darwin Poems (Emily Ballou, UWA Publishing); The Lost Life (Steven Carroll, Fourth Estate); Dog Boy (Eva Hornung, Text); and  The World Beneath (Cate Kennedy, Scribe) to take out the prestigious award.

Malouf has won the award twice before, in 1983 for Child's Play and Fly Away Peter, and 1974 for Neighbours in a Thicket.

The annual award, presented by the Association for the Study of Australian Literature for ‘an outstanding literary work in the preceding calendar year', was first awarded in 1899. Last year's winner was The Slap (Christos Tsiolkas, A&U).
